1920 Rupert Bear debuts

The comic strip first appeared in theon 8 November 1920. It was the creation of news editor Herbert Tourtel and his artist wife Mary. Mary drew the first strips of the ‘Little Lost Bear’ with his distinctive red jersey and yellow chequered trousers, and Herbert wrote the stories. The comic strip has been published ever since.
