About this ebook

John Charters becomes ill and takes on the characteristics of a bat, developing cannibalistic and vampiric features, while being eternally parted between his once human nature and his present animal condition. This tale of metamorphosis mixes Kafkaesque elements with the typical pulp fundamentals that would, later on, inspire the atmosphere and the characteristics of one of the most iconic “bat-inspired” comic book character of all time. Also in the book a restored version of “The Case of the Missing Heir” the very first Bob Kane’s dark comic book story in the style that would make Batman a lasting success!

The story you are about to read is one of the first having a Bat man as the main character. It originally appeared in Spicy Mystery Stories from February 1936. It was written by Lew Merrill, one of the many pseudonym of Victor Rousseau Emanuel, an English pulp writer.

Batman is a familiar name to comics and non-comics reader around the world. Whether you know all his adventures by heart or you just saw a picture of the character on a movie poster you all know he is one of the most iconic characters of the XX° Century.

Batman, like his brother, Superman, is everything but just a lucky intuition, instead he can be considered the most fortunate and perhaps the prime example of a particular character archetype that was created in the first half of the last Century: the urban dark knight.

    Let’s start from the end.
