Historically the state church in England, Wales and Ireland has been the Anglican Church established at the Reformation of 1538 (although later disestablished in Ireland in 1869). The Scottish Reformation of 1560 led to Presbyterianism as the state religion north of the border. The registers generated by these bodies, and from those that subsequently dissented against them, are the records relied upon by many for genealogical research.
