The Knitter loves…
GANSEY TALES
A new project has been launched to create an archive of knitting patterns and photographs of traditional Scottish ganseys - and the organisers are asking for our help!
Knitting the Herring’ has received funding to establish a National Gansey Network for Scotland, which will record the country’s gansey heritage. Members of the public are invited to send in gansey stories, patterns or photographs, to contribute to the database.
Knitting experts Di Gilpin (below) and Sheila Greenwell are closely involved with the project, and there are plans to design a new gansey knitting pattern knitted in a brandnew yarn to be developed with Uist Wool.
It is hoped that the project will lead to a Festival of Ganseys, to celebrate the history of ganseys in Scotland’s fishing communities. For information
