Choosing to spend the day making a 270-mile journey on a relatively slow train might seem like a strange idea. But journeys by steam train have been enjoying a renaissance in recent years, thanks partly to the publicity surrounding the restoration of famous locomotive Flying Scotsman in2016.
Today, more than 500 steam-hauled charters roam the national network each year. It seems that, five decades after steam traction was phased out from the mainline in favour of diesel and electric power, more people than ever want to sample the golden age of steam travel – when the journey was as important as the destination.
