DUFOUR 530

Ever since joining forces with catamaran builder Fountaine-Pajot, Dufour has been on a roll, bringing out a number of new designs in quick succession. Among these is the Dufour 530, which made its debut this past winter at Germany’s Düsseldorf boat show. Designed by Umberto Felci, the boat is available in three distinct versions: “Easy” for owners and charterers in search of simplicity; “Ocean” for those sailors looking for a little more boatspeed and better controls; and “Performance,” which comes with a deeper T-keel, more sail area and racy-looking topsides graphics, for those interested in racing. Four different layouts are also available, with anywhere from three to six cabins (the latter configuration designed with the charter industry in mind), and all three types coming with a fixed sprit for keeping the anchor clear of the plumb bow and flying an A-sail.

HH50

Designed by the multihull specialists at Morrelli & Melvin, the HH50 is a bluewater-capable, fast cruiser configured in such a way as to make it possible for shorthanded crews to knock off impressive 24-hour runs on passage with relative ease. Dual helm stations aft provide excellent visibility, and a push-button mainsheet and self-tacking jib come standard. For those in search of a little more horsepower, a 753ft2 overlapping Solent is also available. All line handling is done from the helm stations, thereby opening up the rest of the boat for living space. As is the case with its predecessors in the HH catamaran line, the HH50 includes a pair of curved “C” daggerboards with optional push-button controlled line drivers to provide yet more lift/performance underway. At anchor the boat’s forward sailhandling area also easily converts to a comfortable forward-facing lounging space.

DEHLER 38SQ

An evolution of the Dehler 38, the Dehler 38SQ is being billed as a simple, fun-to-sail boat, with the SQ standing for “speed and quality,” in recognition of a number of improvements to the boat’s rig and cockpit. Aft, the boat features twin helms with fold-out footrests to make things more comfortable when sailing hard on the wind in a stiff breeze. The boat can also be ordered with multiple keel and rig options, including either aluminum or carbon spars and an optional high-performance square-top main. Belowdecks, several layouts are available, including a three-cabin, one-head version that will snugly sleep six. The Dehler 38SQ even provides eco-conscious sailors an option for better managing their water usage in the form of a filter system that guarantees high-quality water right out of the tap, thereby eliminating the need to carry water in plastic jugs. The bowsprit doubles as an anchor roller, and the end-boom mainsheet runs to a traveler spanning the width of the cockpit in the interest of facilitating better sail trim.

Anchoring Angst
It’s a well-accepted truth of offshore sailing that things get more dangerous the closer you get to land. An extension of that axiom in chartering could be that things get more entertaining the closer you get to an anchorage. In many places we charte

Home Is The Sailor
I am sailing with Robin Lee Graham, but there is no wind. It’s a hot day in July and Montana’s Flathead Lake is glass. The mountains around us are blurred by haze. A wildfire burns to our east. Robin’s blue eyes light up—he’s spotted catspaws ahead.
