Fifty years ago, Ford launched the Mk3 Cortina, which changed the image of that product line completely. Compared with the ousted Mk2, it was almost all new, for there were new engines in a new structure, while hidden away there was a real technical mixture, for the entry-level versions still used old-style Kent engines, and their matching gearboxes. Compared with the much-loved Mk2, the new machine was very different. Not only did it look different, but it felt different too. It was larger and looked much more transatlantic in its style than ever before, looking more Corsair-sized that Cortina-sized, and was very definitely aimed at Ford’s immensely important fleet-car market.
