After its very enjoyable weekly selection of relevant cartoons and morale-boosting drawings during the lockdown months, the Chris Beetles Gallery of Ryderhas produced a strong catalogue and online show of 18th- to 20th-century British figure and landscape watercolours, with a few oil paintings. Among artists regularly championed by the gallery, including Rowlandson, Brabazon and Goodwin, are less familiar names, such as Constance Gordon-Cumming (1837–1924), who travelled in India, Ceylon and the Far East between 1868 and 1880. Here are valuable records of Ceylon, including the burial place of the Kandian Queens that was destroyed for a railway in 1880.
