Mohammed Shamji, 43, was a world-renowned neurosurgeon at Toronto Western Hospital and a faculty member at the University of Toronto.

His wife Elana Fric-Shamji, 40, was a talented physician and worked as a family doctor.

While Mohammed could be too serious at times, Elana was the opposite.

She was a woman that people felt at ease to confide in, while also being funny and positive.

After marrying, the couple had three children.

By 2016, the children were aged 11, eight and three and the Shamji family was complete, but it had never been more broken.
