DROPPING VINYL
If there is one genuinely positive aspect to Record Store Day being reduced to three RSD “drops,” spread over consecutive months, it is that we have three separate occasions upon which to celebrate the event’s impact upon our collections. And three separate credit card cycles in which to finance the “must have” releases.
There’s certainly a generous helping of fascinating items being served up this year, with David Bowie fans, as usual, being targeted with some very strong offerings.
Parlophone’s ChangesNow radio session, from a 1997 BBC broadcast, has circulated on bootleg for years now, but it remains an enjoyable, if occasionally surprising romp through corners of the catalog that are rarely given such exposure.
“Aladdin Sane,” “Repetition,” “Lady Stardust,” “The Supermen” and “Shopping for Girls” are all highlights, with the latter perhaps inadvertently promoting another upcoming Bowie reissue, Music on. Not one of Bowie’s (or even Tin Machine’s) best albums, but hard enough to find on original vinyl that a silver colored reissue is a welcome arrival.
