Why?

As sunny as the South of France! Charming villages, beautiful scenery

Ile de Ré is a gem of an island off the west coast of France, just perfect for a weekend stopover while travelling to or from your destination, or for a longer, relaxing stay.

Its enviable climate (it boasts as many hours of sunshine as the South of France) makes this a popular holiday spot. It can be accessed either by boat or from La Rochelle via the spectacular 3km-long bridge, the Pont de l’Ile de Ré. There is a toll to pay on the way over, but the return journey is free of charge.

This small island is just 30km long and 5km wide, so it is possible to explore all of it from end to end in a short space of time. But as soon as you arrive, it feels as though relaxation is compulsory and it’s almost impossible to dash around, even if you want to
