The acoustic guitar played by Kurt Cobain on Nirvana’s MTV Unplugged performance has set a record price at auction. The 1959 Martin D-18E acoustic was sold for $6 million (£4.9m), outstripping the $3.95 million (£3.1m) paid for a black Stratocaster owned by David Gilmour. In another sale, a custom-made guitar used by Prince on his Purple Rain, Sign O The, and sol for $563,000 (£456,000).
