The Lanyon Valley Steam & Electric Tramway
The Lanyon Valley Steam & Electric Tramway (LVS&ET) is modelled between 1909 and 1950. It has to be that time line as my saloon car has ‘Watson’s Bay’ and ‘Erskine St Wharf’ destinations. This was my favourite Sunday afternoon outing. You could catch a tram from Coogee cross-country to Bondi Beach, walk up to my grandparents’ place for refreshments then walk to Rose Bay, hopefully getting a glimpse of a flying boat landing or taking off, then catch the tram out to Watsons Bay and take ‘tea’ at the little tea rooms near the ferry wharf. Take the ferry back to Circular Quay and a tram back to Coogee. Such were the simple pleasures of my childhood.
I remember the cry of “ from the conductor swinging along the foot-board, the paper boys crying out “ and acting as ex-officio conductors passing fares and tickets across the crowded trams. If you were a good lad, the driver of the outbound tram would signal the driver.
