Many years ago, travelling back from a family trip in the South West heading north-east on the A38 towards Derby, we passed Burton on Trent. I spotted some very tall chimneys and large brick structures over the fields in the distance. What was that I wondered? We had some time available, so we headed into town. What we discovered left me both bewildered and excited about a possible modelling opportunity.
The chimneys and brick structures were brewery buildings of various sorts, either derelict or in use for one thing or another. Importantly, we discovered and visited the Bass Museum of Brewing (later the National Brewery Centre, now closed from October 2022). We spent the rest of the day at the museum, going through every room and eventually stumbling on the very large 2mm:1ft scale model railway layout display of Burton centre in the 1920s.
The model was huge, and depicted the town centre with all the railways, brew houses and streets. Masses of casks were displayed, literally thousands, and the buildings appeared to be colour-coded for the different breweries. Red stood out foremost. Bass used red for all its
