Beware of stinkblaar

40 YEARS AGO This article provides some practical information on how to deal with datura seed contamination of maize.

Contamination of maize with datura seeds can be a big headache for the grain producer. Even a minimal amount in maize is enough to cause consignments to be turned away from co-operative silos, according to the weed-control team of the Summer Grain Centre in Potchefstroom.

Because the seed of Datura stramonium and D. ferox, commonly known as thorn apple or stinkblaar, are poisonous and detrimental to human health, the law dictates that no more than one datura seed may appear in a kilogram of maize. Should maize
