Kleesfontein... where is it and who was Jan Munnik? These are questions I’ve frequently asked myself since the day I attended an auction where numerous items were on sale from the estate of a descendant of James Logan from Matjiesfontein in the Karoo. At the auction I was fortunate to acquire a few things, not the least of which was a Cape gun with a 16g shotgun barrel alongside a .577 rifle barrel, a rare old beauty.
This Cape gun was made in the workshop of J Moreton & Co, awell-established British gunsmith of the 19th century that was situated in London, where they operated out of various addresses for over a century. They were known for the quality of the working guns which they
