At age 85, Ran Blake may be the most unjustly obscure jazz pianist, an artist with an exquisite touch and an eccentric style, influenced by an odd blend of Bartok, Pentecostal gospel, Thelonious Monk, the rain-soaked romanticism of , and the dark suspense of Alfred Hitchcock. Blake has described himself, he said afterward that he could literally see the scenes from the movie, as vivid as anything in real life, while he played. I don’t know another pianist with such a direct link between the images in his mind and the movement of his fingers.
