Eagle-eyed visitors will observe that the Churchill painting in the hall () bears the great man’s signature twice. I had the story from Sir Edward himself: on one of his visits to Chartwell, Churchill invited him to choose a painting as a gift. When Sir Edward had made his choice, Churchill noticed that, apparently, he hadn’t signed it. He rectified this forthwith and handed the picture over. When Sir Edward got it home, he realised it was signed in both lower corners. What would be the value, I wonder, of a canvas given by our most famous Prime Minister to a future one—and signed twice?
