INTEREST in on-track plant has been on the increase among enthusiasts in recent years as an antidote to the diminishing importance of locomotives.
They pop up here and there on a number of permanent way maintenance functions and are commonly associated with track possessions too.
It was not unusual to find a track machine tucked away in a siding at some station waiting for a quiet spell to head out on to the mainline to tamp and align track or to move from one site to another. Occasionally, they are moved within engineers' trains or as a separate load behind a locomotive.
