HOW TO CHANGE THE OIL AND OIL FILTER IN YOUR CAR, AND WHY
Choosing fresh oil for your car and removing the old is one of the most rewarding DIY jobs. It’s important to get the right engine oil. Even if you’re selecting oil recommended by the owner’s manual or the in-store directory, a quick read of our guide will help you understand the life-cycle of oil and why it’s important to choose the correct type.
Old oil is toxic to the environment and has to be disposed of appropriately which means don’t put it in the rubbish bin at home. Most rubbish centres will dispose of oil as long as it’s in a sealed container (you may have to empty it into a trough). To find your nearest oil disposal centre contact your local council or check the local council’s website for information.
WHAT WILL I NEED?
• New oil*;
• New oil filter;
• New sump plug washer (if required);
• Closed-ring spanner and/or socket fit sump plug (usually 14-17mm);
• Oil filter grip (if required);
• Oil drain pan*;
• Filter mesh funnel;
• Rag(s);
• Appropriate work clothes (they may get very dirty/covered in oil);
• Safety goggles (important when working under the car);
• Disposable gloves;
• Jack and jack stands (if clearance is an issue); and
• Container for old oil and a disposal centre**;
*Check the owner’s manual or in-store directory to find the capacity of oil required for the engine. For engine oil, try to buy a little more than what's required.
For the oil pan, buy one that holds a higher capacity than the oil coming out.
