A Year With The Wattbike Atom

STATIONARY TRAINERS … they have been around for almost as long as the bicycle itself. Like many things, the more you look the more you will find and this was especially the case when researching the smart trainer buyers guide in this edition.

Two standout trainers we came across were an 1890’s penny farthing, fixed to a cast iron base and featuring a whopping weight on the wheel for resistance. The other was a bike on rollers, around 100 years ago, with the rollers actually driving a revolving wall. Talk about innovation, a country scene painted on a cloth roll to give the rider the impression of moving through the countryside while training!
