Built in the early 1800s and still used as Hereford’s Crown Court, the Shirehall was once a prison, and public hangings were held outside. Many of the original fittings still exist, including an iron gate in the cells, and the hook in one of the courtrooms where the judge would hang his hat before pronouncing the death sentence.
