FIGHT FOR JUSTICE
It was a horrific situation that plays out all too often in the United States and around the world: an unarmed black man at the physical mercy of a white police officer. For almost nine minutes, Minneapolis Police Department officer Derek Chauvin pressed his knee into George Floyd’s neck, pinning him to the ground as bystanders begged for him to be freed. But the officer’s face remained expressionless, even as Floyd pleaded “I can’t breathe” and “they’re gonna kill me” – among the 46-year-old’s last words before he died.
Floyd’s alleged crime? Trying to use a fraudulent $20 bill at nearby deli, Cup Foods.

His tragic death, captured on video for the world to see, sent waves of outrage across the US and the globe last week as black communities demanded justice for Floyd and an end to the horrific and disturbing acts of violence inflicted again and again on their people. Calling for the world to witness what had happened, and put an end to the fear and suffering caused by a society built for white people, protesters gathered at the intersection where Floyd was killed, parading signs that said, “Justice for George”, “I can’t breathe” and the all-too familiar phrase: “Black Lives Matter”.
