ANALOG ADVENTURES
In my previous installment, I promised to get right back to the lock-in amplifier. However, events beyond my control suggest that I should defer that promise … for a little while, at least. Your indulgence and forgiveness are appreciated. Our intrepid editor, Rich Moseson, reminded us CQ columnists that we need to be thinking about outdoor hamming and especially Field Day … and how we can best participate, and encourage others to do so as well, considering the challenging circumstances under which we all find ourselves. This will be a welcome departure for me, at least, as I have spent far too long in a double-quarantine … one because of the coronavirus and another because of an unusually long and dreary winter here in Alaska, from which we’re just beginning to emerge as I write this. It’s a bit odd to be thinking about Field Day with three feet of snow still out in the yard, but such is the prevailing state of affairs.
Nevertheless, I have always enjoyed Field Day, despite the fact that propagation in interior Alaska is unalterably abysmal during the event. () Regardless of propagation, it’s a great opportunity to share amateur radio with the public at large (or even at small), even if we can’t get out of our backyard, radio-wise.
