Terry Kiely knew things were getting silly when he approached the entrance of Soho hotspot Chinawhite in 2001, only to be greeted by a superfan. “Alright, Fletch?” said a smiling figure in the doorway, nudging his friend in the ribs.

“It was a weird feeling,” he tells FourFourTwo, nearly two decades on from the height of his fame playing Karl Fletcher in Sky One drama Dream Team. “There I am, waiting at the doors of a place like that – a pretend footballer being recognised by the real thing. Bizarre.”
But such was life as the leading character in a hit series which recorded 419 episodes until 2007, mourning 42 deaths following hostage situations, bombs, bribes, murder and enough extramarital affairs to make a Parisian blush.
