The Art Deco style represented a metaphorical and physical breath of fresh air. It was the intro to the great song of modernism that rang out so potently and so powerfully across the 20th century, providing the world with the greatest buildings, artworks and designs that human history ever afforded.

Art Deco was the first taste of the ambition of architects set free, the first attempt at true democratisation – of building abnormal things for normal folk, a unique global style which threw away the dowdy chintz of gothic Victoriana and emphasised light, space and chic. The style was heavily indebted to ocean liners, which were both design icons and also a kickstart for globalisation.
