All in the capture

I took my new D500 on a day out to Oulton Park race circuit. I had taken a few photos and during a break had a look at what I’d taken, but I’d set the camera up wrong! It was a dull overcast day, which resulted in a few underexposed shots. I’ve always used the free Nikon Capture NX-D software, and a few clicks on the Shadow, Highlight, Contrast and Brightness controls fixed it.

Here’s a before and after with Capture NX-D. Looking at the results, do I really need to spend hundreds of pounds on software?
