The story goes, the reason that the motorcycle makers 'AJS' was so-called, was that of the four founding brothers, only one had a middle name. And so, named after Albert John Stevens, AJS came into being.
The man behind the name, born 1885, was known as Jack, while his three fellow directors of the fledgling company were Harry (born 1876), George (1878) and Joseph (1881).
