‘My new collection will feature exciting fabrics that are kinder to the planet’

Clare Szabo, 40, lives in Cambridge with her husband, Mike, and their five-year-old daughter, River. She founded River Elliot, a luxury sustainable bridalwear brand, in 2017.

THE IDEA

By the age of 35, I’d been sewing for several years, even taking a year out of work to complete an advanced fashion design course. I’d always imagined using the training to fulfil my dream of designing and making glorious vintage-inspired gowns, but confidence and finances never allowed me to do so.

I kept plodding along in my publishing job, working from home in London, which gave me time to be part of a growing worldwide sewing community.

Following an issue at work that wasn’t resolved the way I felt it should have been, I ironically felt empowered to take the leap and launch an atelier-style bridalwear
