Alternative energy sources like solar panels are getting cheaper every year (it’s still not CHEAP: you’re looking at around R250K–R350K to get a medium-sized house off the grid, but it’s much cheaper than it used to be). Most estimates I’ve seen indicate that installing alternative energy sources in private homes pays for itself over 3–5 years, so it certainly seems worth exploring if you own your own home and intend to stay put for a while.
