Mouthy to the point of insubordination at school, she’s also incredibly intelligent, which results in her status as an outcast, but one whose sharp wit her peers don’t want to be on the receiving end of. One person who is drawn to her instead of keeping a safe distance is Mr Popularity, school sports star Connell (Mescal), whose mother cleans Marianne’s family home and who has the intellect to match his classmate’s.
