Hope springs eternal

In these times of declining runs and falling catches, salmon fishing could quite reasonably be viewed as challenging. On many of our great salmon rivers spring runs have fallen away, leaving beats dependent on summer grilse and fuelling the prophets of doom. Spring salmon do still run our rivers, however, and when they put in an appearance ‘springers’ can offer quite spectacular sport.

On my local river, the Aberdeenshire Don, spring runs over the past few seasons have been encouraging, so despite chilling water temperatures and the occasional snow flurry, I will always venture forth in March and April in pursuit of Salmo salar . So it was that a day in early March saw me on the still bare banks of the Don, above the Doctor’s Pool, salmon rod in hand.
