I GREW UP IN WHAT WAS THEN rural New Jersey. Most of my friends lived on family farms. Many purchased high-performance cars right after high school. Owning a car of my own was out of the question, as a college education was non-negotiable in my family. I had to be content riding shotgun in my buddies’ cars. In September 1964, I headed for college in Virginia, eight hours from home, so rides in cool cars were limited to school vacations and summers.
