How to Get it started

1 So, your classic won’t start. First things first, listen or watch to see if the starter turns the engine. If it does, go to page 81. If it doesn’t, go to step 2.

2 Turn on the headlamps and operate the starter motor — do they go dim? Does the starter click? Ask an assistant to help if you can’t see a reflection.

3 Check if the starter motor’s jammed — does the shaft turn? If not, that’s your problem. Here, the starter’s been removed from the car for clarity.

4 Check the battery voltage.
