It was the 1990s when I got to know François Delecour. One of the first things I really learned was the truly Gallic way he frequently shrugged his shoulders, which roughly translated to mean ‘Sod it, but we can’t do any more than this, right?’
It was an approach that certainly made a difference to the way he was treated at Boreham, and indeed to the atmosphere that always surrounded him and his cars on events, or in service areas.
I think it’s quite fair to suggest that never has any other Ford rally driver – not even the legendary Colin McRae – made such an immediate impact on the World Rally Championship scene as he did in 1991. With just one special stage to go on the Monte Carlo rally – his first-ever works event for Ford – 28-year-old François Delecour looked all set to win the event. Ten
