I’ve just returned from my annual holiday where I took a real break from gigging, and also spent a little time working on some weaknesses in my playing. During the working year it is difficult for me to go back to basics and decide to work on a fundamental problem. Life is just too busy, and when I do have time to practise, I usually end up working on music that I need to learn for a gig or a recording, or I practise elements within the structure of someone else’s music.
Personally, I’ve always felt weak on melodies, whether improvising them or hearing them over long chord progressions. I think I share this with a lot of bass players, as our roles rarely require these skills. We often focus on building
