WHEN BOOST IS BEST

To understand how a turbocharger benefits your engine, you first need to grasp exactly how an engine generates its power.

The engine is basically a pump, sucking in air through the intake to be used for combustion, whilst fuel is pumped up from the tank – and the air/fuel ratio that is compressed by the pistons reciprocating motion is then ignited by spark plugs. In a diesel motor, the combustion happens slightly differently, with the air being compressed first and then the diesel fuel added afterward. Because compressed air is hot, and diesel has a high energy potential, the mixture ignites on its own without the use of spark.

Either way, the resultant energy released by the engine is what essentially drives your motor. But there’s also wasted gases that are expelled through the exhaust system. And this is where a turbocharger comes in.
