GT: What is it about guitar instrumentals that appeals to you?

ZW: Well, for me it’s definitely the writing. When I listen to Al DiMeola, Eric Johnson or Mahavishnu Orchestra and stuff like that, it’s always the writing that makes it work. Another example is Joe Satriani. He has amazing technique and skill, but what separates him from most people is his writing. And writing instrumentals is not easy, you have to keep the audience’s attention while you’re playing: when you’re playing songs with singing it’s a lot easier.
