The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge had Irish eyes smiling as they charmed the Emerald Isle on their first official visit there last week.

Stepping off their commercial Aer Lingus flight at Dublin Airport in brilliant spring sunshine, the Duchess immediately set the tone for their historic visit, wearing shades of green in honour of her hosts.

She opted for a green printed silk peplum dress by Alessandra Rich under a darker green coat by Catherine Walker, adding a vibrant LK Bennett clutch and Emmy London Rebecca heels in “greenery suede”, along with a velvet hairband to hold her newly trimmed soft curls in place, plus dazzling Daisy Heritage diamond earrings by Asprey.

And the couple continued to prove their diplomatic credentials as they headed to Aras an Uachtaráin, the official Dublin residence of Ireland’s President Michael D Higgins and his wife Sabina.

Inside the grand 18th-century house in Phoenix Park, Sabina told the visitors: “Delighted to welcome you. You’ve had lots of exciting things happening in your family.”

They were treated to a true Irish welcome, chatting to their hosts over a cup of Barry’s tea, shamrock shortbread, oat biscuits and lemon drizzle cake after a private meeting in the President’s office and a chance to sign the visitors’ book.

But it was the President’s Bernese mountain dog Bród who stole the show, bounding up to the royal visitors for a stroke in the garden.

As she petted him, the Duchess said: “He’s lovely – how old is he?” Bród usually shares the limelight with playmate Síoda, but he was out of action with a sore paw, Kate heard.
