Die Hel is heavenly!

Gamkaskloof has always fascinated me. A place nicknamed “Die Hel” must be unbearably hot and hostile, right?

In January 2020, my husband Albert and I drove the Swartberg and Elands passes to visit the kloof. There had been a fire in the area and many of the CapeNature campsites had been damaged. Annetjie Joubert from Fontein Guest Farm offered us the option of camping under one of her trees.

The next morning, we pulled on our hiking boots and walked along a dirt road to see some of the restored houses in the kloof. Later in the afternoon we swam in the Koningsgat rock pool and on the way back we saw
