LETTERS FROM TANZANIA: Bertha Nyachiriu

My husband is a policeman. And a Tanzanian policeman’s wife soon learns to be resilient, especially when she has many children. The frequent call-outs outside rostered hours are part of her husband’s routine and she gets used to spending time at home alone.

In Dar es Salaam we have problems with burglaries, armed robberies, drugs, and prostitution. My husband has been fighting these for years. On my part, I do my best to create a peaceful environment at home for him to unwind when he returns.
