ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN

ANGELENE CHAN

The CEO of DP Architects and a board member of the Urban Redevelopment Authority, Angelene Chan is the first female architect to be named the President’s Design Award Designer of the Year in 2018. Also the chairperson of Dover Park Hospice’s building and development committee, she has plans to open a DP Architects office in Paris as well.

CHAN SOO KHIAN

Chan Soo Khian is the founding principal and design director of multidisciplinary design firm SCDA Architects. The Yale University graduate was Designer of the Year 2006 at the inaugural President’s Design Award. SCDA’s portfolio includes projects in Singapore, Mumbai, Tokyo and New York. One of its latest is the $90m revamp of the Singapore Art Museum.

RICHARD HASSELL

The co-founder of architectural practice Woha, Richard Hassell is also an adjunct professor at the University of Western Australia. Woha has 11 President’s Design Awards, and another accolade for World Building of the Year (Kampung Admiralty project) from the 2018 World Architecture Festival. Also a prolific artist, his works have been exhibited worldwide.

KOH SEOW CHUAN

DP Architects, the firm behind such landmarks as Singapore Sports Hub and Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay, was founded by senior consultant Koh Seow Chuan. He is also an ardent collector of art and artefacts, and was conferred a Distinguished Patron of the Arts by the National Arts Council in 2018 for his contributions to the local arts scene.

LIU THAI KER

In 2017, after 25 years at RSP Architects Planners & Engineers, Liu Thai Ker started his own practice. Morrow is named after the studio of his late father, pioneer artist Liu Kang. The former Urban Redevelopment Authority and Housing & Development Board CEO received the William J Mitchell International Chapter Prize from the Australia Institute of Architects in 2018.

MOK WEI WEI

Mok Wei Wei is managing director of W Architects, the firm behind the refurbishment of notable Singapore landmarks such as the National Museum of Singapore and Victoria Theatre and Concert Hall. A board member of the Singapore Land Authority, Mok seeks inspiration from traditional Chinese architecture.

ONG TZE BOON

Ong Tze Boon is the group executive chairman of multidisciplinary consultancy Ong&Ong Group, founded by his late parents, Ong Teng Cheong, Singapore’s fifth president, and Ong Siew May. The firm specialises in design, engineering and project management. He is also director of the firm’s philanthropic arm, Ong Foundation, which he established with his brother Tze Guan.

ROY TEO

The Mill Group is an award-winning consortium of design firms synonymous with ultra-luxe, bespoke interiors founded by Roy Teo. A finalist for the prestigious Andrew Martin Interior Designer of the Year Award, he supervised the completion of The Covette Clinic, a luxury medical aesthetics clinic, in 2018.

WONG MUN SUMM

Wong Mun Summ is the co-founder of award-winning architectural practice Woha, and a former member of the Urban Redevelopment Authority design advisory panel for landmark structures such as Marina Barrage. Woha’s new project, the 50ha Punggol Digital District, will be Singapore’s first smart district when it is completed in phases from 2023.

RAYMOND WOO

The principal architect of his own firm, Raymond Woo & Associates Architects, Raymond Woo is behind such notable projects as Ngee Ann City and Singapore Science Centre, and the conservation of Yueh Hai Ching Temple, which is Singapore’s oldest Teochew temple. He also sits on the advisory panels of the Land Transport Authority and Urban Redevelopment Authority.

YEO SIEW HAIP

Yeo Siew Haip is the managing director of SAA Group Architects, which co-designed Singapore Changi Airport Terminal 4 with UK’s Benoy. The firm is currently working on the 7.66ha Woodlands Health Campus, a 1,800-bed facility comprising an acute-care hospital, a community hospital, a nursing home and specialist outpatient clinics that is scheduled to open in 2022.

YU YAH-LENG

Yu Yah-Leng is the creative director and founding principal of lauded design and branding agency Foreign Policy Design Group, which she established with husband Arthur Chin. Responsible for the branding and design of The Working Capitol and Gallery & Co at the National Gallery Singapore, Yu was a jury member of D&AD 2018 and Kyoorius Design Awards 2018.

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT

CHONG SIAK CHING

Under CEO Chong Siak Ching, the National Gallery Singapore welcomed more than 1.97 million visitors between April 2017 and March 2018. The Justice of the Peace also sits on several boards, including Mandai Park Holdings, National Arts Council and the Yale-NUS College Governing Board. She is a keen supporter of charities such as Parkinson Society Singapore and YMCA.

GLEN GOEI

Glen Goei, the co-artistic director of theatre company Wild Rice, got his first big break in 1989 in London’s West End with his title role in M Butterfly opposite American actor Anthony Hopkins. Also a writer and film-maker, he released his first feature, Forever Fever, a musical comedy in 1998. In 2019, he co-directed Revenge of the Pontianak with Malaysian film-maker Gavin Yap.

IVAN HENG

Cultural Medallion recipient and founding artistic director of Wild Rice, Ivan Heng has shaped, directed and acted in numerous award-winning plays. After almost two decades of creating theatre for local and international audiences, the company finally has its own theatre, Wild Rice @ Funan, designed by Zarch Collaboratives and Charcoalblue.

LAURA HWANG

Laura Hwang is the director of Linyi Investments and chairperson of the Singapore Dance Theatre. She dedicates her time to championing the arts as well as women’s rights. The former president of the Singapore Council of Women’s Organisations is currently Singapore’s representative to the Asean Commission on the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Women and Children.

ERIC KHOO

Cultural Medallion awardee Eric Khoo, the youngest son of late businessman Khoo Teck Puat, helms film company Zhao Wei Films. He is best known for directing Mee Pok Man and Ramen Teh. In 2019, he received the Honorary Cyclo Award at the 25th Vesoul International Film Festival of Asian Cinema. Food Lore, his newest anthology series for HBO Asia, is set to air in late 2019.

GAURAV KRIPALANI

Festival director of the Singapore International Festival of the Arts since 2018, Gaurav Kripalani hopes to “inspire the next generation to appreciate the arts”. He also sits on the board of Singapore Repertory Theatre, where he was artistic director for 15 years and worked on more than 150 productions.

DICK LEE

The man behind boutique creative firm Dick Lee Concepts, Dick Lee is best known for his ubiquitous composition Home, which celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2018. The Cultural Medallion recipient’s popular Fried Rice Paradise stage musical was adapted into a 13-part series for Channel 5 and Toggle in 2019.

HOSSAN LEONG

A recipient of the Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Order of Arts and Letters), Hossan Leong is one of Singapore’s most recognised entertainers. Owner of Double Confirm Productions and co-owner of Paul Carr Media, he marked his 50th birthday with a three-week run of Hossan-ah 50! Love You Leong Time! at the Drama Centre Theatre.

JEREMY MONTEIRO

Celebrated jazz pianist, singer and music educator Jeremy Monteiro has performed all over the world. The Cultural Medallion recipient is also the executive director and music director of the Jazz Association (Singapore), which holds its first pinnacle concert in November 2019. In 2018, the 40-year music veteran released his tribute album, Yesterday Once More.

ADRIAN PANG

Co-artistic director Adrian Pang helms Pangdemonium Theatre Company with his wife Tracie. The award-winning thespian recently starred in the Netflix film Boi and made six critically-acclaimed productions, including Dragonflies, a play commissioned by the Singapore International Festival of Arts, which he wants to take on tour internationally.

SUSAN PEH

Susan Peh is the senior director of Singapore-based law firm Yeo-Leong & Peh. An accomplished pianist, she is also a Friend of the Arts Award recipient and a fellow of Trinity College London. She serves on the boards of the Singapore Chinese Orchestra and Food from the Heart, as well as chairs the Jazz Association (Singapore)’s gala and fundraising committee.

MILENKO PRVACKI

Yugoslavia-born artist Milenko Prvacki is a senior fellow at the Office of the President of Lasalle College of the Arts. The Cultural Medallion recipient has had exhibits across Europe and held solo exhibitions in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Sydney, Santa Monica and more recently, Belgrade in Serbia. He chairs the LTA Art Review panel, assisting its Art in Transit programme.

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT

HARESH SHARMA

Haresh Sharma is the resident playwright of The Necessary Stage, which has produced over 100 plays in more than 20 cities. In 2019, the Cultural Medallion recipient restaged his critically acclaimed play Off Centre and saw the premiere of new works such as Acting Mad. The philosophy behind his long-standing career? Believing that “your only competition is yourself”.

ALVIN TAN

The founder and artistic director of The Necessary Stage (TNS), Cultural Medallion recipient Alvin Tan has directed over 60 plays, staged locally and at international festivals, including several in 2019 such as the critically acclaimed Civilised and the sold-out restaging of Off Centre. In May 2020, TNS will premiere The Year of No Return, which focuses on climate change.

EUGENE TAN

Under Eugene Tan’s directorship, the National Gallery Singapore achieved record attendances with the Yayoi Kusama exhibition in 2017. He was also responsible for the museum’s first impressionist exhibition in Southeast Asia that featured more than 60 masterpieces from Paris' Musee d’Orsay. Tan is also the director of Singapore Art Museum.

YVONNE THAM

Previously assistant CEO, Yvonne Tham is now the CEO of The Esplanade Co. The former deputy CEO of the National Arts Council brings with her a wealth of experience in arts and culture policy and management. As part of The Esplanade’s extension, she has been tasked with the development of a new 550-seat waterfront theatre slated to be built by 2021.

KENNIE TING

Kennie Ting, the director of Asian Civilisations Museum and Peranakan Museum, is also the author of two books on port cities. Under his leadership, the Asian Civilisations Museum presented Guo Pei: Chinese Art & Couture in 2019, which reflected the museum and the couturier’s shared passion for keeping Chinese art and heritage relevant in today’s society.
