At the 78th Academy Awards in 2006, French filmmaker Luc Jacquet’s March of the Penguins won the best documentary gong. The film was an unlikely critical and commercial success, earning US$127 million at box offices worldwide. It also thrust Jacquet—previously a little-known director and screenwriter—into the spotlight.
