Nellie Bly

Intrepid journalist, daredevil reporter and undercover sleuth, Nellie Bly revolutionised 19th-century journalism. Carving out new forms of reporting, she smashed the gender-defined glass ceiling, battering down the doors for the countless female journalists who followed in her footsteps.

Born Elizabeth Jane Cochran in 1864, Nellie’s journalistic career began at the age of 20 with an impassioned response to a misogynistic Her letter was so remarkable, the editor offered her a job. Her first article, , was a rewriting of her rebuttal letter, published under the pen name, Nellie Bly.
