OVERSIZE, OVER THERE

It is always interesting to have a nosy at what others are up to. Oversized load moves are very often unwitnessed by rival operators and vehicle enthusiasts – current or heritage – or the general public for that matter. Contracts may take place far from any road, or at night, when roads a quieter. Or it might just be a case of missing them by virtue of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

For instance, how often d’you travel the back roads of the Commonwealth of Kentucky? Yes – Kentucky is a US State, but one of four that uses Commonwealth in its official title. The term is borrowed from England, where in days of yore it was used to define a political community founded for the common good. In a Kentucky context, it has traditionally been used to emphasise government by the common consent of the people. (Is there a lesson here, d’you wonder?).

They don’t do things by halves in Kentucky, an attitude epitomised by heavy lift contractor Edwards Moving & Rigging. The firm started life in the early 1960s, specialising in transporting intact entire houses – and the occasional public building. During the decades since, it has progressed to moving oversize loads of every description, with operations that extend well beyond the State.
