SUCKING It’s the first and most basic action of all—the desire to suck. When a newborn is placed at her mother’s breast, she will usually try to latch on. Dr Bushra Al-Rubeyi, a UK-based consultant paediatrician says, “This is a reflex, along with grasping and making a fist.”
What you can do to help: This is all about trusting your instincts. “Listen to your baby and learn her responses,” says Dr Bushra. “Sucking calms her, so let her suck her fingers or a dummy—and don’t interrupt her.”
