BAT SPIT COFFEE
Within the rich volcanic soils of central Madagascar’s Itasy province, grows a coffee with a rare twist - bat saliva. The specialty bourbon pointu coffee costs just over $100 per pound making it more than 50 times the price of regular-grade coffee. Reports explain that when the wild bats chew on the ripe coffee berries, a reaction occurs between the animals’ digestive fluids and outside air giving the coffee a uniquely smooth flavour. One customer, Van der Vaeken, said that with “normal coffee, after two minutes, you forget the taste - but this coffee stays a very long time in your mouth.
