Awnings that extend and retract at the press of a button, umbrellas that rotate 360 degrees so different parts of the garden can be shaded, graceful sails that soar overhead — stylish, easy-to-use shade systems are in plentiful supply.

What you choose will depend on myriad factors. Do you want permanent coverage or do you want something flexible? Is it just the sun you want to keep at bay or the rain as well? Is your outdoor living space in a high-wind area or is it overlooked by neighbours? How you answer such questions will help guide you towards the most appropriate shade solution.

Also use a critical eye and look at how people (and pet) traffic flows throughout the space, and examine entry and access points. The shade option you choose shouldn’t have bulky fastenings or posts that block or restrict movement.
