THE EASY GUIDE TO BATHURST

Once a year in October, Australians and New Zealanders from all walks of life congregate at the Australian town of Bathurst to watch ‘The Great Race’. My first foray into that very ‘ocker’ tradition was in 2019, when I made the pilgrimage with four mates to see what all the fuss was about. The following serves as a simple guide to those who have contemplated going but have not yet committed.

Bathurst is a delightful town of 37,000 people and is the oldest inland settlement in Australia. It is also one of the largest. It was first settled in 1815 but really took off in the mid 1800s when gold was discovered. At 662m above sea level, it can be cold at certain times of the year compared to places that are at sea level
