The Rudge motorcycle company began in Wolverhampton, England, in the late 1800s making bicycles, as did many contemporary manufacturers.
In 1894, the company amalgamated with the Whitworth Cycle Company run by Charles Pugh and his two sons, Charles Vernon Pugh and John Pugh, to form Rudge-Whitworth Cycles. The company’s sales motto was: “Rudge it, do not trudge it.”
